Hyundai’s Futuristic Hybrid Blue-Will Makes Its U.S. Debut at NAIAS

Hyundai Blue-Will, the so-called Toyota Prius and Honda Insight rival has finally made its U.S. debut at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show today, as Hyundai showcased the fourth concept from its Namyang Design Center.

This cool and futuristic concept car was first shown in South Korea last spring. The Hyundai Blue-Will’s lithium-ion-polymer batteries that power the 134hp electric motor can drive the car upto 40 miles on a single charge. On the other hand is a 1.6-liter petrol gas engine mated to a CVT transmission. Hyundai has not yet decided on whether the production model would be a plug-in hybrid or a regular one.

The design of the car is often referred to as “eco-sleek”. It has a five-door hatchback body style and includes multiple character lines that intersect along the body sides. The panoramic glass roof with embedded solar cells keeps the car charged on a hot day. The concept also features the drive-by-wire technology. The car uses LED lighting to save energy and also comes with a software program Eco-Coach that will give drivers feedback on being more efficient and also help them monitor the fuel consumption. The Blue-Will has also used  eco-friendly plastics for some components like the headlamp bezels, made out of recycled plastic bottles and few other interiors and exteriors have been modeled using plastic derived from plant extracts.

“At a time of rising concern about the environment and our energy future, Blue-Will demonstrates to eco-conscious car buyers everywhere that Hyundai has practical hybrid solutions that will appear on the next generation of vehicles,” said Oh Suk-Geun, executive vice president of design, Hyundai Motor Company.

Hyundai has steadfast plans to manufacture its  concept car aiming to give a sturdy fight to its competitors. It may cut down on some accessories and gadgetry but Hyundai’s hybrid model will be a potential contender in the eco-friendly car segment that’s running wild now.
