2011 BMW 5-Series Sedans Recalled Over Faulty Fuel-level Sensors
Having recalled the BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo recently, BMW is now heading for another round of recalls of the 2011 BMW 5-Series sedans in the United States and China. A total of 12,400 vehicles are said to affected with the same problem in fuel-level sensors as that experienced by the owners of GT.
As per the news, 6,400 cars will be recalled in the U.S. while 5,000 to 6,000 BMW 5-Series sedans will be called back in China. These include models built from Jan. 12 to July 1. Spokesman Frank Strebe said that a total of 10 incidents have been reported so far where the fuel sensor had become wedged against the tank. Here’s how National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) explains the issue.
“The vehicle’s fuel-level sensor within the fuel tank can become wedged against the tank. If this occurs, the fuel gauge in the instrument cluster would display a larger amount of fuel than was actually in the tank. As a result, if the tank became empty, the vehicle could stall, increasing the risk of a crash.”
Strebe also stated that replacing a part of the fuel tank sensor would take only about half a day.
