2011 Ford Mustang Gets An All New V6 Engine
The 2011 Ford Mustang will receive a new all-aluminum 3.7 liter DOHC V6 engine. The new engine featuring twin independent variable camshaft timing, will churn out an impressive 305 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. An automatic six speed transmission and a manual six speed transmission will be available as compared to the five speed transmissions available on the 2010 Mustang. The anticipated EPA fuel economy ratings for the six speed automatic power train is 19 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. The ratings are 18/29 respectively for the manual transmission.
The new 3.7 liter is a port-injected cast aluminum 60 degree V engine, against the 90 degree outgoing engine, with four valves per cylinder. The engine uses Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) and a Direct Acting Mechanical Bucket (DAMB) valve-train to vary valve control through the rev range along with a new dual-exhaust system and re-tuned intake for the engine. The Ti-VCT system operates on oil pressure, where the actuators and pressure cavities are integrated with the camshaft bearing end caps. Integrating the parts has made the engine compact making it smaller and lighter than the outgoing engine, but delivering more power. Tuned composite intake manifolds, coil on plug ignition, piston-cooling jets, a cold air induction system and a deep sump oil pan are the measures taken on the engine to improve efficiency, power and durability.
The 2011 Mustang comes with a pair of new transmissions: The six speed automatic transmission called the 6R80 and the 6 speed manual transmission named the MT 82. The 6R80 is the same transmission unit that goes into the Ford SVT Raptor. The 6R80 is capable of paddle shift, though it is not equipped in this application, and comes with a “hill mode” that helps to provide more engines braking on steep gradients. The manual gearbox, the MT82, has a short-throw linkage and all gears on all shafts ride on needle bearings. Engineers at Ford have jived with the engine controls to pitch in and eliminate the gear shift ‘thunk’ by adjusting the torque output as the transmission shifts.
To tackle the extra power, the 2011 Mustang V-6 receives stiffer bushings, bigger and stiffened stabilizer bars. Low rolling resistance tires and GT disc brakes all around are standard. The cowl shake problem on the 2010 Mustang has been addressed with improvements in underbody and cowl cross-bracing and structural foam injected into the door pillars. On the insides, the gauge cluster is upgraded with a 160-mph speedometer and 8000-rpm tachometer. Fold down rear headrests to comply with new head restraint requirements, blind-spot aids for the mirrors and Ford’s My Key system will be available in the Mustang for the first time.
Ford now seems to have taken the battle right into the Chevrolet camp. With the 3.6-liter V-6 engine in the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro producing 305 horsepower and getting the EPA fuel economy ratings of up to 18 mpg in the city and 29mpg on the highway, the Mustang should be considerably quicker than the heavier Camaro while being more fuel-efficient.
