Taking the GM stand at the event will be a show car version of Coverlet’s compact contender, that is most likely to retain much of its features in the production version as well.  According to the few initial details, new model will use the same engines as the Cruze saloon and the new Orlando model (139bhp 1.8-litre petrol unit and a 161HP or 123 HP 2.0-litre diesel). Also the cargo capacity for the Cruze hatchback is close to 400 liters and will feature 60/40 split rear seating, reveals the automaker.

GM describes that its new hatchback will feature a coupe-like roofline to enhance the overall sporty appearance and that it has been built on a new body-frame integral system (BFI), promising high levels of stability and solidity.

“Cruze is turning out to be a real success story. We are selling it in 70 countries around the world and it has recently surpassed the Aveo as our top selling passenger car nameplate globally,” said Wayne Brannon, president and managing director of Chevrolet Europe.

The current sales plans do not include the U.S. market, while the Chevrolet Cruze hatchback will be launched in Europe in mid-2011. More details and pricing are expected to be disclosed around the auto show.
