BMW Getting Geared Up to Launch Activehybrid 5 in October, More Hybrids to Follow
At the last Geneva Motor Show, BMW had announced the release of its new ActiveHybrid 5 sedan. Coming October, the 5 series will hit the roads of Australia putting an end to all the anticipation. Later this year will also mark the arrival of two more petrol-electric models 3 series followed by 7 series in the early 2013, BMW has confirmed. According to BMW the 5 series BMW will be priced from $122,900 before on-road costs. BMW is on a roll as it is introducing 2 new models in six months and with this BMW Australia will have one of the broadest hybrid line-ups in the market.
Talking about the ActiveHybrid 5 sedan, it comes with a combination of electric motor with a powerful petrol engine, with a major focus on big performance and small-car fuel consumption. The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 series will be costing more than the 535i model, on which it is based. The price is set to be around $7300 which comes with full benefits of greater performance and better efficiency in fuel. The green sedan’s hybrid system sees 40kW electric motor paired with the 535i’s 225kW/400Nm 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine to produce a powerful output of 250kW along with 450Nm of torque. The fuel consumption is still listed between 6.4 and 7.0 l/100km, in comparison to 8.4 l/100km for the regular 535i.
The ActiveHybrid system is teamed with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and BMW improves upon the 535i’s 5.9-second 0-100km/h time of 5.9 seconds. It uses 6.4 litres of fuel per 100km on combined cycle, which makes it overall 24 percent more efficient. Its fuel consumption rate in urban roads is 5.7L/100km which is almost half in comparison to the 535i’s official 11.9L/100km urban consumption rating. In fully electric zero-emissions mode, BMW ActiveHybrid 5 can travel up to around 4km achieving speeds of 60km/h. At the same time, it also has an option of decoupling the petrol engine and coast on the electric motor at speeds up to 160km/h. On the styling front, the ActiveHybrid 5 has a different galvanised grille slats, matt chrome tailpipes, 18-inch Streamline alloy wheels and ‘ActiveHybrid 5’ lettering on the C-pillars. It is available in an exclusive Liquid Blue metallic paint colour.
