After the significant success of the BMW X6, the German automaker is now planning to bring a smaller version to the market. Dubbed the X4, the crossover/coupe/sports version is expected to fill up the gap between the next generation X3 and the X5.

BMW said that it has sold 80,000 units of the X6 since launch and following this very success, now plans to bring a more affordable and smaller coupe SAV. According to Autocar, the X4 will borrow its design style from theĀ 2001 X Coupe concept and the bigger X6 itself. The X4 is under a serious consideration and is waiting for a green light from the BMW executives to enter into production.

“We haven’t made any firm decision,” a source informed Autocar, “However, the X6′s success shows there is a continued demand for sporty off-roaders.”

If approved, the car will be built off the upcoming X3′s platform and will most likely share some engines with it.
