Remember GM releasing a teaser just few days ago promoting a new concept set for launch in Geneva? Not yet? Another clue, to the left side of the badge and the grille, sticking out from the bumper was an emblem with the word “Voltec.” You got me now? Yes! The Opel Vauxhall Flexitreme GTE Concept, the futuristic concept car from General Motors that was teased last week, has finally been released.

The five-door coupe is, according to the design director Mark Adams, “a new kind of GT car”. Using Ampera’s plug-in hybrid powertrain, the 158 bhp electric motor develops more than 270 lb-ft of torque from standstill. The 1.4-liter engine produces 70 bhp thus delivering 53 kW peak output. The hybrid can cover 30 miles in electric mode and provides a total driving range of 300 miles. Average fuel consumption is estimated at 175 mpg, with CO2 emissions of less than 40g/km. The hybrid engine gushes to a top speed of 125 mph, with a 0-62 mph sprint time of around nine seconds.

The exteriors include low bonnet line, signature LED headlamps, new trapezoidal grille and wing-shaped chrome bar carrying a large Vauxhall emblem. The 4-seat upper mid-size concept vehicle features 21-inch alloy wheels that are relatively narrow, to reduce wind resistance, and are fitted with 195/45, low rolling resistance tyres.

Mark Adams quoted the Flextreme GT/E concept as “a logical next step towards Vauxhall’s emerging strategy for the electrification of the car. ” It still remains unknown whether the concept will reach the production phase or not, but we hope to hear more at the Geneva Show.
