GM To Build & Sell Cadillac ATS, CTS, XTS in China

According to latest reports, General Motors is showing a lot of interest in in the idea of producing three current and future Cadillac sedans in China. The company is set to reveal this plan at the Beijing Auto Show later this month. As of the current situation, only one Cadillac model is being built in China – the STS-based SLS executive sedan. The sedan is being built by Shanghai General Motors, a joint venture between General Motors and SAIC Motor Corp.

The three models that have been planned for production in China include the ATS sport sedan, the midsize CTS sedan and the executive XTS sedan. Building the cars in china would most importantly imply a reduction in prices as these cars wouldn’t have to bear the burden of the heavy tariffs levied on imported cars by the government.

The specifications of the models planned for production in China are yet to be known. They could either be clones of their American counterparts, or could sport longer wheelbases to suit the needs of Chinese buyers who prefer being driven rather than driving. With the luxury car market doing very well in China, the move to manufacture cars within the country could be considered a smart move to take on the likes of the BMW 3 Series and Audi A6 models.
