GM Extends Saab Deadline – May Retain Saab 9-5 & Cabrio
Steve Wade’s campaign “I Won’t Buy From GM” to coerce GM for not selling Saab seems to have laid some impact (or not). as GM today extended the Dec. 31 deadline for bids for Saab, to 7th Jan. It has also stated that it will restart some production lines in January after a shutdown.
Dutch luxury carmaker Spyker had shown keen interest in buying Saab to benefit from its technical resources and its distribution network. Although the deal could be seen fading away with Saab finally moving towards the junkyard, Saab has revealed that it will restart some production lines again in January for its new 9-5 model and cabrio.
“We have the orders and we have to deliver them as usual. We also have the orders for the 9-3 and others. The factory has to continue again…We are preparing the wind-down process. At the same time we are open to options, to bids that come in. Therefore the deadline has also been dropped,” Saab spokesman Eric Geers said.
GM struggled with Saab ever since it acquired the automotive arm of Saab AB in 1989. Automotive news has reported that the supportive Swedish government has said it would allot 542 million Swedish crowns ($75 million) measures, to deal with the situation when thousands of jobs will be affected as Saab shuts down. This news comes amidst the fact that GM is also offering heavy discounts on its Saturn and Pointiac cars to do away with the remaining inventory.
