GM Fails to Complete Deal with Tengzhong. Hummer to Make Exit.
General Motors today announced that the deal to sell Hummer to Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machines Co. didn’t work as expected, and that they would begin to orderly wind-down Hummer’s operation in the following months. The Chinese company was unsuccessful in winning the approval from chinese regulators before the proposed timeframe.
While Hummer has long been one of GM’s staple products and biggest money makers, GM had earlier announced that they would let go of the brand in an effort to concentrate more on Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac. John Smith, GM’s vice president of corporate planning and alliances said that “GM will now work closely with HUMMER employees, dealers and suppliers to wind down the business in an orderly and responsible manner.” GM would also continue to honor existing Hummer warranties.
While China’s Assistant Commerce Minister Wang Chao announced that his ministry had not received an application in regard to the purchase of Hummer, Tengzhong says that they tried and failed to win the approval. The fall-apart of the Hummer deal once again brings to light GM’s struggle in negotiating deals with global entities on several of its weaker products. This news follows right on the heals of the GM’s unsuccessful efforts to sell the Saturn brand. Not to mention the Saab Saga – the back-and-forth on the deal with Spyker, where several global entities showed interest in the brand.
Wall Street Journal reports that GM sold 9,046 Hummer SUV’s within the country last year, a number that has dropped significantly since 2006, when they sold 71,000 units. While Hummer has around 370 global dealerships, including 153 in the U.S. GM had expected the deal to save 3,000 jobs in the U.S.
