GM Plans Four-Door-Coupe and SuperSport Variant on Cruze Platform
General Motors is trying to give its Delta platform a sporty look and feel in two forms as it aims to capitalize on its less expensive platform to reap higher profit margins.
According to the report in Motor Trend, Chevrolet’s first plan includes adding a radical four-door-coupe on the same platform as the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze. The car would retain the Cruze’s wheelbase, but with a more rakish roofline that would sacrifice some back seat space for a sportier profile. The changes to the regular sedan’s sheet-metal and glass house may however add a significant cost to the makeover bringing it closer to the price range of the Chevrolet Camaro.
A more aggressive and a sportier variant would be the Super Sport version of the Cruze with a 2.0L Ecotec turbocharged 4-cylinder engine along the lines of the 260-horsepower unit and 260 lb-ft of torque that powered the Pontiac Solstice GXP/Saturn Sky Redline and the coming 255-horsepower Buick Regal GS.
Both the four-door coupe and the Cruze SS could take the larger Epsilon platform’s all-wheel-drive system to alleviate the annoying effects of torque steer. Well, no official reports have yet been revealed and this may just be another rumor in autosphere.
