Spied – The All New BMW 6 Series Cabrio

Prototypes of 2010 BMW 6 Series Cabrio were seen undergoing test runs in Europe and it was caught on camera by photographers for the first time in Germany. However,  BMW’s next-generation 6-series is not expected to arrive until late 2010, as the current model was given a facelift only over a year ago. The current 6 series is a successful model and sells over 20,000 units per year. Hence, Bavarian Motor Works would not dream of hurting sales of the next generation 6 series and will therefore keep clear off any controversial styling.

Overall shape and dimensions of the new car seems to be much of the same. Going by the spy shots, the prototype appears sleeker and sports a wider stance. Wheelbase is longer than the current model, but both front and rear overhangs appear shorter.  The 2010 6-series gets an even more vertical grille and headlamps that look much like  Z4. The canvas soft top should do away with any fears of a heavy folding top that eats into boot space. Reports suggest that the new comer will be more refined and all panels in the car are expected to be replaced. While the ‘Bangle Butt’ boot lid is retained, it is not as distinct as on the current model and looks like a two piece rear lid replica of the 5 Series Grand Turismo. The boot lid appears to be cut into two with the lower one that goes along the side to open for the top to travel up and down. The smaller cut-line higher up the trunk lid might be just for cargo access.

Under the hood, expect to see the new 4.4 liter twin turbo engine, an updated version of the 4.8 liter V8 and 3.0 liter petrol engine available on the current model. The twin turbo charged 6 cylinder diesel engines should be the other option available. Top of the line M6 model should be available to the discerning customer with an even more efficient turbocharged V8 engine. Those apart, expect BMW’s Efficient Dynamics updates that include Stop/Start and regenerative braking, to be made available on the 2010 6-Series for the first time.

The new 6-Series is expected to debut at next year’s Geneva Motor Show. Rumors are that the car will be offered in two different versions, a luxurious GT and an aggressive sports model.
