The Porsche 911 Turbo S will have a new hybrid companion in the Porsche stand at the Geneva Motor Show next month and its none another than the Porsche 911 GT3 R.

As Porsche celebrates 110 years after Ferdinand Porsche developed the world’s first car with hybrid drive, the German automakers are once again taking the hybrid technology in production-based GT racing.  Based on the rear-drive 911 GT3 R, the Porsche 911 GT3 R uses a rear-mounted, 480 hp 4.0-liter flat-six gasoline engine at the rear in conjunction with two electric motors each developing 60 Kw power on the front axle.

Instead of the regular batteries , the electric motors are powered by an electrical flywheel power generator fitted in the interior next to the driver. For those unfamiliar with the term ‘flywheel’, the generator itself is an electric motor with its rotor spinning at speeds of up to 40,000 rpm, storing energy mechanically as rotation energy. It gets charged whenever the driver applies the brakes, with the two electric motors reversing their function on the front axle and acting themselves as generators. The 120kW of power boost lasts for 6–8 seconds and is activated by a button on the steering wheel. The benefit, according to Porsche, is quicker acceleration out of corners and during overtaking and enhanced fuel economy.

The new 911 GT3 Hybrid will line-up at the Nordschleife of Nürburgring on May 15the and 16th.  Porsche also plans to use the hybrid race technology at Le Mans from 2012.
