On December 1, 2009, General Motors announced that they would either sell or close down Saab by December 31st, 2009. The negotiations with Spyker Cars fell over on December 18 resulting in GM announcing they would wind Saab down, starting January 1, 2010.

Though not exceptionally large in absolute numbers, Saab followers will do anything to see Saab survive to see another day. Even though we may not entirely agree with their positions, they deserve our respect for the tireless efforts to save their beloved brand.

On Christmas eve, Steve Wade, from Tasmania, launched a new campaign “I Won’t Buy From GM” to put some pressure on GM to not sell Saab by keeping the Detroit automaker in the media spotlight. Steve Wade runs the SaabsUnited enthusiasts’ website.

The mission of the website is to answer a very straightforward question: “Will you buy a GM product in future if they wont support Saab by selling the brand to a willing buyer?”

According to Steve Wade, the purpose of the campaign is “for people to declare to General Motors that if Saab Automobile is closed down instead of being sold, then the people signedup will not consider the purchasing another GM vehicle in the future.”

While General Motors could not care less if a few thousand Saab fanatics would not buy their cars, the Detroit automaker may be concerned about the media backlash if the word spreads around.

Whether or not this move, will actually have any effect on GM’s decision, is another story.

Steve urges us to keep spreading the word about the campaign to take it to the news services where it can have the maximum impact. The point is, in simple words, to “let General Motors know that people care about what happens to Saab“.

Within 3 days of the launch of the site, more than 2480+ people have commented on the webpage (even with one of those days being Christmas)
