The upcoming SEMA show will be the occasion for the introduction of a community designed Local Motors Rally Fighter. The Rally Fighter by the Local Motors has the heritage of legacy along with fresh appeal. It has an aggressive, sleek style to give the looks of an upgraded AMC Eagle. The off-roadster is also custom-designed and build for the American Southwest deserts.

The car is created and designed by an internet community of car enthusiasts, mainly inspired by the renderings of Sangho Kim of Pasadena, California. Local Motor’s members also participated in the development process. The community and company members together helped to collaborate on body design details, interior, side vent creation and even accessory design.

The Rally Fighter is powered by a 3.0-liter BMW twin-turbo clean diesel engine that generates a power of 265-hp and an impressive 425 pound-feet of torque at 1750rpm. A 6-speed automatic transmission sources the power to the rear wheels. It uses BMW’s 335d power plant to achieve 30 mpg off-road and 36 mpg on the highway.

The rally car has a steel tubular-space framework with carbon fiber body panels and lightweight thermoplastic. As a result the Rally Fighter weighs just 3,200 pounds (1451 kg), which allows for the stellar fuel efficiency. Other technical specifications include suspension with 18-inch of travel and manually adjustable ride-height options to enable the car to be configured for a desert racing or a city driving.

Local Motors will build the car at regional micro-factories, which will also double as service stations. The first factory will be in Wareham, Massachusetts, and a second will be in Phoenix, Arizona in 2010. The company plans to open 50 micro-factories around the United States. The upcoming SEMA Show will judge whether this business concept of buyers designing the car and helping to assemble it is a success or not.
