Spyker CEO, Victor Muller Reveals Saab Future if GM Deal Successful

In an interview with AOL Autos on 31st Dec 2009, Spyker CEO Victor Muller revealed some amusing facts about his company’s strategy for Saab, if they can successfully buy it from General Motors.

The product plan sounds very similar to those previously floated by Saab executives. Spyker will have Saab rebuild its brand around the Saab 9-3, new-for-2010 Saab 9-5, and the Saab 9-4X crossover. If Saab were to take that route in future, Spyker’s extensive experience in making low-volume super cars would certainly be an asset to it. The entry-level 9-1 model is out of the picture, for now, although Muller himself admitted that he would love to build the 2006′s celebrated Aero X concept (pictured above), if he can figure out a way to fund it. “It’s one of Saab’s best designs of the past 5 years; it has got real Saabishness in it, and it deserves to be built” commented Muller,in the phone interview.

Muller also said that Spyker has decided not to pursue plans to reduce Saab’s U.S. dealer network, to 137 showrooms from the present number of 218. In fact, the Spyker CEO suggests that it will be reasonable to expect Spyker to sell its own super cars in the future through Saab showrooms (they are currently distributed through Lamborghini and Bentley outlets). This is certainly welcome news for Saab dealers and customers, And in future, Spyker’s super cars could very well benefit from Saab’s all-wheel drive expertise, among many other things.

Although, it should be noted that all of this future product discussions will be pointless if Spyker can not convince GM to hand over the keys to Saab. An extended deadline for sales negotiations was set by GM on Wednesday, after it became clear that the sales negotiations would not be wrapped up by December 31st. If the date does not get extended again, we will know for sure what fate awaits Saab on January 7th.
