Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A., Inc., has announced a voluntary safety recall of around 308,000 2007-2008 model year RAV4 and certain 2008 Highlander and Highlander HV. The recall is to replace the airbag sensor assembly, the company noted.

The list of recalled vehicles includes about 214,000 RAV4 vehicles and approximately 94,000 Highlander and Highlander HV vehicles. The Japanese automaker added that no other Lexus or Toyota vehicles are involved in this recall.

Explaining the fault, the company said that if one amongst the two sensors in the airbag sensor assembly malfunctions, the airbag warning light will illuminate and the roll detection system will be suspended. If both sensors fail nearly simultaneously after initial airbag system check, the seat belt pretensioner and the curtain shield airbag could be inadvertently activated.

Toyota will inform the owners of the involved vehicles through an interim notification letter advising them of this recall. The customers can get their vehicle repaired at the Toyota dealers, who will replace the roll sensing sensor assembly with a new one at free of cost.
