Volkswagen 3 Row Crossover Under Development, To Compete Against Pilot, Explorer And Durango

There has been a rumor circulating in the auto market regarding a three-row crossover from Volkswagen. And several reports from inside the automaker suggest that Volkswagen is indeed moving ahead with the development of a three-row crossover. If this is true, we will soon see a Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer and Dodge Durango competitor with Volkswagen badging in the market.
The new crossover is expected to be developed on the Volkswagen Passat platform and will be produced in Volkswagen’s Chattanooga, Tennessee, plant or a company facility in Mexico. Volkswagen subsidiary Skoda also recently announced its plan of a seven-seated crossover. So, we are assuming that both the crossovers will be almost similar.
Volkswagen aims to sell 800,000 units in the US market by 2018. Thus, the automaker will definitely expand its product lineup and will make it less expensive. The new crossover is also expected to be launched around this philosophy. The prime rivals of the new crossover, the Pilot and the Explorer are priced at $29,280 and $29,105, respectively. So we naturally expect the three-row crossover to be priced reasonably around the $30,000 mark. Additionally, if this crossover is launched, then Volkswagen will retire the Routan minivan, which is rebadged Chrysler Town & Country.
The automaker has also revealed that the Tiguan will be reengineered to be suitable to US customers. It seems Volkswagen is indeed quite serious about its set target for 2018 in the US market.
