Volkswagen Unveils Their New 1.2L Three-cylinder Turbodiesel
Volkswagen announced their new 1.2-liter three-cylinder turbodiesel engine at the 31st International Vienna Motor Symposium. The Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion model, a concept version of the next-generation Volkswagen Polo unveiled at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, was shown equipped with this engine. The new engine focusses to tap out the maximum possible dynamic engine performance from its reduced displacement.
Volkswagen declares that the new 1.2-liter TDI with 3 cylinders, can meet the current and future demands in long distance and freight transportation, and at the same time deliver top values in CO2 emissions and fuel efficiency. Inspite of its relatively small displacement, the 1.2-liter 75PS / 55kW TDI engine can produce a torque of 180 Nm at just 2,000 rpm.
The specification for the new 3-cylinder TDI also facilitate maximum acoustic comfort and weight reduction without compromising the thermodynamic efficiency of the engine. It exploits all the advantages of a reduced number of cylinders very well – namely a reduced friction power loss and lesser weight. The new engine shares some common features, like the basic architecture and common-rail fuel injection systems, with Volkswagen’s 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter inline four cylinders.
The new 1.2-liter three-cylinder equipped Polo BlueMotion is expected to make its debut later this year. Combined with extended rocker panels for lower drag, 15-inch low rolling resistance tires, automatic start stop, a blanked off grille, and brake energy regeneration, it is expected to be rated at 71.3 mpg (U.S.) and 87 g/km of CO2 emissions. That will make the new Polo BlueMotion the most efficient five passenger internal combustion car on the road.
