Volvo Contemplates a New Luxury Coupe

Looks like Volvo’s C70 power-retractable hardtop coupe will make it through 2013 but from what we hear there is no C70 replacement in the pipeline. The company is instead working on a larger, more upscale C90 luxury coupe that is expected to be bigger and pricier than the current C70. The C90 is expected to be more profitable even at a low production volume if the price were high enough. Also, Volvo’s Scalable Platform Architecture would allow the C90 to share a platform with the next S80 sedan, reducing development and production costs.

The original Volvo C70 made its debut in both coupe and convertible variants and a power retractable hardtop version wasn’t launched until 2006. We are not too sure whether the C90 would be launched as a coupe with a separate convertible variant to follow, or as a power retractable hardtop model.
