Buckle up friends. Here’s a car for the common man. Tata has just announced that it will bring the world’s cheapest car, the Tata Nano to the U.S. and that its gonna cost a tad lot (pun intended) more than the original price. The car will be retrofitted to meet American Emissions and Safety standards, and will cost something around the $8000 figure. Tata Technologies Ltd. had the car on display at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show.

The Tata Nano is already been assembled in an European version, and will be sold there from 2011 for $8000 as well. All we know as of now is that the stateside version will have comparable figures. If thats the case, it will still bag the title of the “Cheapest Car in the U.S. by beating out the $9,970 Hyundai Accent for the slot.

“The structural changes that would need to be made, the changes that would be required as far as emissions are concerned, and some of the features that would be appropriate to add to the vehicle for the North American market, obviously that would drive up the price point,” Warren Harris, Tata Technologies president said.

The original version of the car comes with a 624cc 2-cylinder MPFI engine, that outputs 35 PS at 5250 rpm and 48 NM at 3000 +/- rpm. The car can achieve top speeds of 100 kpmh (around 65 mph). Body color bumpers, and door handles, fog lamps, spoilers, air conditioning, power windows, cup holders, rear seat headrests are all optional add-on’s to the base model which currently sells for $2,500 in the Indian sub-continent.
