Renault Announces Twingo RS Entry-Level Rally Cars
Renaultsport Technologie, the motor sport division of Renault has announced the launch of two new rally prepped cars based on the Renault Twingo. These cars named as Twingo Renaultsport R2 and Twingo Renaultsport R1 boosts the companies existing line up of rally ready cars, providing customers with reasonably priced options. Both the cars comply with the laws and regulations set by FIA for participation in professional rallies while not losing out the practicalities of a car that can be used daily.
Both the cars get powered by a naturally aspirated 1.6 liter engine that drives the front wheels. By employing tuned engine parts and a customized ECU, the R2 manages to pump out 160 horsepower, 27 more than the stock Twingo. It uses a five speed sequential gearbox with paddles mounted on the steering column. The gearbox has a limited slip differential to improve the cornering capability for this tiny car by a large extend. Both front and rear suspensions are adjustable to suit the style of driving and road surface. It also runs on a wider track to provide the car with better road holding. The R2 offers plenty of safety features in addition to the roll cage, like a six point safety harness, racing seats, electronically controlled fire extinguishers that operates automatically and a battery master switch.
The R1 is a lower-priced alternative to the R2. While the car offers the same engine and chassis, it produces lesser power and has to do with an open differential and a conventional manual gearbox. While both comes with a built in roll cage, the one in R1 is bolted onto the monocoque chassis, unlike the welded roll cage in the R2. The other noteworthy differences are pertaining to the suspension and its degree of adjustability. Interior of both the car remain identical to the stock car except for the analog dials in the instrument cluster which gets replaced by digital LED read outs.
The R2 is priced at 27,990 Euros excluding taxes while the price for R1 remains unannounced. These cars will join the Clio, Maxi, and Renaultsport R3 in wooing potential customers who wish to enter in low level rally events.
