Street Legal Cars

When it comes to fast cars most people think about the fastest going ones, but what about the fastest accelerating. And if you know anything about Bugatti Veyron it won’t be long before you think you know which one that is. It is time to think again. Bugatti built the Veyron to be the fastest and fastest accelerating street legal car in the world. But that dream has been shattered now. Well not fully but a part of it at least. A transmission repair guy, Steve Pateman, from Hitchin near Hertfordshire has almost single handed-ly modified his 93 Vauxhall Calibra to ‘out-accelerate’ the Veyron.

In order for the Calibra to outperform the Veyron, even thinking about the stock engine is dumb. The stock engine could only produce a mere 115BHP or a 201 horses with a turbocharger. For the grand fiesta the Calibra had been fitted with a 11.5L V8 engine producing a metal crunching 1400BHP and a Nitrous Injection system which he actually made from scratch. It could go from 0-60mph in just, you won’t believe, 1.25 second (1 second has also been a claim) and could do a quarter mile in 7.8 seconds. On this two-seater do not even think about getting power to all the four wheels because you will be having only two wheels when you start a drag!

But the really interesting fact is that, the car is fully street legal. By street legal it means registered, with street legal tires, number plates, wipers etc. He even got insurance for his baby. On the No Problem Raceway in Belle Rose, Louisiana, all the drag cars need to be street legal and be able to run 25miles around the village without frightening the public and return in one piece.

Being able to drag means you should have a parachute for braking, full roll cage, fire systems, safety harness and nerves of steel, for sure. The parachute has been nicely hidden under the rather ordinary looking rear bumper. And dragging is no child’s play for the master builder of this car. Peteman managed to beat everyone at the local drag-strip with this 93-Vauxhall. He continuously grabbed the 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2003 street car championship.

Since the car is pre 93 model it is also err, tax-exempted. It couldn’t beat the Veyron on top speed, being only 186mph. And the killer fact about this car is that its fuel economy is 5MpG against Veyron’s 4MpG. Another thing to cheer about is the fuel used. The car runs on ordinary unleaded petrol. Now that’s what you mean by street legal isn’t it?

So how much does this car cost? It costs only a quarter of the Veyron’s price; that is about 100,000 pounds. Here is a Video of the modified Calibra.
