GM has done the job again with their 2010 Chevrolet Camaro doing exceptionally well, head on head with the 2010 Ford Mustang. Camaro outsold the mustang for three consecutive months now.

In June, Chevrolet Camaros outsold the 2010 Mustang by 9320 units to 7362 for the first time in 16 years. In July, GM sold 7,113 Camaros while Ford Mustangs sales dropped to 6,686 units. Now in August, 8,680 units of Chevrolet Camaro where sold compared to a total of 6,289 Mustangs. GM reported that sales will remain strong for atleast, next couple of months because of the accumulation of orders at present. Chevrolet is currently struggling to keep up with Camaro demand.

Initially, Chevrolet received 14,000 pre-orders for the camaro along with additional 25,000 dealer orders. Camaro’s sales is sky high right now that there is only about a 6-9 day supply on the market with most dealers getting about $500 over sticker. Presently, the high sales of the Camaro are because of its recent introduction and the Mustang’s saturation in the car market over the years.

The 2010 Ford Mustang shares the same platform and powertrain of its previous versions. Drivers who are looking for something new may have felt that the Camaro is a better choice. The Camaro has been generally well received in the press. Also, the Camaro does outperform the Ford in certain aspects like base horsepower, fuel efficiency. However, for GM it will be hard to keep the streak going for the coming months, considering its current, financial condition and its recent emergence from bankruptcy.

The new ratings by Consumer Reports give the 2010 Ford Mustang a slight, upper hand over the Camaro. In the study, Mustang received a road test score of 78 points while the Camaro received 71 points. Besides the looks, Camaro’s superior powertrain also justifies its sales. It comes with a 304 horsepower V6 almost matching the V8 offered in the Mustang GT. It also provides an excellent fuel efficiency of 29mpg. Now, the interesting point that remains to be seen is whether the Camaro successfully hangs on the lead till the year end, an honor the Camaro never tasted for the last 16 years.
