Ford Focus Electric on its Way to Dealerships

The 2012 Ford Focus Electric is on its way to dealerships all over the United States. Over the next couple of weeks 350 Ford Focus Electric cars will be sent to 67 dealers in California, New Jersey and New York. Ford Motor Co expects electrics and hybrid vehicles to account for up to 25 percent of its sales volume by 2020. We don’t know much the idea of a $40,000 Focus will appeal to consumers but the move to modify the Focus for electric propulsion is said to allow some semblance of a profit margin.

Each dealer will get about six cars and to build more excitement for what’s likely to be a slow-starting sales story the dealers will hold one of the EVs as a demonstrator. Ford CEO Alan Mulally has said that he would not consider it a failure even if the company sold fewer than 5,000 Focus EVs in its first year. In the first four months of 2012, GM sold 5,377 Chevrolet Volts, while Nissan sold 2,103 of its Leaf electric cars. The battery used in an all-electric vehicle, such as the Focus EV, can cost between $12,000 and $15,000. That would represent around a third of the Focus Electric’s overall price of around $39,000.
